1973 Tom Seaver New York Mets Salesman's Sample National League Champions Ring

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,370

1973 Tom Seaver New York Mets National League Championship ring produced as a salesman's sample by Balfour. This 10K gold ring was designed to replicate the ring awarded to Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver and was used by the company's salesmen to show prospective customers a sample of Balfour's highest-quality work. The top of the ring features a representation of a baseball, designed with fourteen inlaid faux diamonds, set within a blue stone. The lettering around the bezel reads "1973 N.L. Champions N.Y. Mets." One shank features a banner displaying the name "Seaver," the Mets team logo, and the number "41" (Seaver's uniform number). The other shank features a representation of Shea Stadium, the scores of all five games between the Reds and Mets in the National League Championship Series, and a depiction of a Mets cap. Engraved on the interior band is "Balfour 10K." While this is not the ring actually awarded to Tom Seaver, it is an exact replica of the one that Seaver received, produced as a salesman's sample by the ring manufacturer Balfour, and is its equal in its display value and appearance. In fact, the only difference between this sample ring produced by Balfour and the rings awarded to players is that this ring has faux diamonds; the rings actually given to the players had real diamonds. As such, it offers collectors a rare alternative to actually owning a player's ring, which the players or their families rarely make available. Near Mint condition. Size: 10. Weight: 24.77 grams. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/1,500+.
