Rare 1995 Rawlings Mickey Mantle Commemorative "Funeral" Glove

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $830

In the field of Rawlings Mickey Mantle store-model gloves, none are as unusual, or rare, as that offered here: a 1995 Mickey Mantle commemorative glove that is commonly referred to in the hobby as a Mantle "funeral" glove. The term is quite literal, as this glove is one of a small number of specially produced gloves commissioned by the Mantle family for use as gifts to the pallbearers at Mantle's funeral, as well as to a few close friends. The right-handed fielder's glove is a replica of a 1950s era Mantle "MM" model glove, complete with an early version of Mantle's facsimile signature stamped in the pocket. While our research has corroborated the fact that these gloves were given to the pallbearers, we have been unable to discover the exact number produced by Rawlings at the time. Certainly, the number was quite small, as this is only the second example we have ever seen (the other was the glove given to pallbearer Johnny Blanchard). The offered example was purchased by our consignor at public auction a number of years ago, at which time the auction house stated in its catalog description that only nineteen such gloves were produced by Rawlings, with sixteen going to the Mantle family and the other three retained by high-ranking executives at the company. It was further stated that this glove originated from a Rawlings executive. If so, then the information cited in the description with regard to production numbers is probably both credible and accurate. The fact that these gloves were only presented to very close friends of the Mantle family is almost certainly the reason why so few have come to market. This is an exceedingly rare Mantle glove, and one that is absent from even the most advanced collections. The glove displays no use and is in Near Mint condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $830
