Circa 1930 Spalding Babe Ruth Fielder's Glove with Exceedingly Rare Picture Box

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,963

Circa 1930 Spalding Babe Ruth Home Run Special glove, model "MO," housed in its original illustrated box. This box is one of the most elusive Ruth collectibles in the hobby and should not be confused with the more common Reach Babe Ruth Home Run Special glove box that is often seen offered at public sale. To the best of our knowledge, the offered box is one of only approximately three examples extant and we cannot recall the last time we have seen another, let alone together with the original glove. The black and red graphics feature a large illustrated portrait image of Ruth on the cover, with the same image appearing on both the front and rear side flaps. "Spalding Babe Ruth Home Run Special" is lettered above Ruth's image on the cover and the Spalding logo appears in the lower left. The model number, "MO," is stamped on the front flap. The box lid displays an approximate 1 x 1-inch tear in the front flap (paper loss) and has splits along most of the flap seams that have been repaired with clear tape. The bottom portion of the box also displays tape repair to splits along the seams. While technically in Fair to Good condition, the top of the lid bearing Ruth's illustration is free of any significant defects and presents as Excellent, making this an exceptional Ruth display piece. The right-handed fielder's glove shows moderate wear and all of the manufacturer's stampings on the front are very light, but legible, including Ruth's facsimile signature and the "Home Run Special" designation. The leather remains soft and supple, with no tears, and all of the lacing remains intact. In Very Good condition overall. This is an exceptional example of this great rarity and one that has resided for many years in one of the the finest retail glove collections in the hobby. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (Open).
