1959-1967 Bazooka Mickey Mantle Collection (8)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,115

Collection of eight different cards of Mickey Mantle issued by Bazooka dating from 1959 to 1967. Missing only 1966 and 1968 for all the Bazooka issues featuring Mantle. These are all extremely attractive examples, which is not surprising as they have been carefully assembled one card at a time by a very dedicated collector with an eye for condition for his personal collection. Two cards are graded, one by PSA and one SGC. 1) 1959 (very slight irregular cut as is so common with Bazookas, which are by definition hand-cut package-design cards, otherwise bright and crisp, with sharp corners, and the number "59" written in ink on the back); 2) 1960 #31-33 Mantle three-card panel (Nr/Mt-Mt); 3) 1961 #1-3 Mantle three-card panel (flawlessly cut, with the dotted lines clearly showing all the way around with room to spare, a light crease near the top edge of the reverse has no impact on the cards, the cards grade Mint); 4) 1962 Mantle (irregular cut and ink on back, otherwise Nr/Mt); 5) 1963 #1 Mantle (Ex); 6) 1964 #1 Mantle (PSA EX-MT 6); 7) 1965 #1 Mantle (SGC VG 3); and 8) 1967 #7-9 Mantle three-card panel (the year "1967" written in blue ink on the back, otherwise Nr/Mt). It is very rare to find such a beautifully assembled near-complete run of high-quality Mickey Mantle Bazooka cards offered as a collection. This is a very impressive group of unusual Mantle cards issued by Topps under the Bazooka brand name, but which are actually considerably rarer than the standard Topps issues. This is a difficult group to value. The 1961 panel alone could possibly grade very highly. (A 1961 Bazooka Mantle panel graded PSA MINT 9 appeared as Lot 714 in REA's May 2010 auction and all alone sold for $2,115.) According to the 2011 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards these Bazooka cards, in Nr/Mt condition, have a total book value of $4,275. This lot has great potential break value and is a tremendous foundation for the assembly of a complete Bazooka Mantle collection. Total: 8 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,115
