1888 WG1 Game Card Tim Keefe

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $823

Graded EX-MT+ 6.5 by PSA. Magnificent high-grade example from the 1888 WG1 Playing Cards set featuring legendary Hall of Fame pitcher Tim Keefe. Bright and crisp, with brilliant colors, and just a little minor fading along the left edge of the reverse (which is all that keeps this card from grading Nr/Mt). This game card was issued at the peak of Keefe's Hall of Fame career. His 35 victories (against just 12 defeats) and 1.74 ERA both led the league in 1888. This is an exceptional card on many counts. The WG1 Playing Card set is one of the few nineteenth-century sets printed in color. While this set has not received the attention of many other pre-1900 issues, because it is not a tobacco issue, it is a very rare set, far rarer than many of the most popular issues of the 1880s such as N28 and N29 Allen & Ginter. This is an exceptional example of Tim Keefe, one of baseball's greatest pitching legends, from one of the most elusive of all nineteenth-century sets. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $823
