1953 Topps Complete Set (274)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,994

70% range in grade from Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex-Mt), and 30% are Vg to Vg-Ex. This is a very impressive mid- to high-grade complete set of 1953 Topps, highlighted by very attractive examples of all the key cards to the set, including #82 Mickey Mantle. This set was personally collected by our consignor when he was a youngster and has been carefully saved all these years. The commons and minor stars in this set are particularly sharp, but the stars were handled a little more (back in 1953) and therefore grade lesser (as reflected in the condition composite and key-card grades). This set may represent a particularly interesting value to collectors. The cards are classic, they look great, most are fairly high grade (70% Ex to Nr/Mt), yet the set will naturally be valued at a far lower level than an across-the-board high-grade set due to the (in most cases) slightly lower grade of higher-value cards (which still look great). This is a particularly sharp-looking set, and one that can be upgraded if desired, or kept exactly as is, representing an unusually strong collecting value. There is always an extremely strong demand for classic sets that are impressive yet are still relatively affordable. It's easy to see why. In many cases, in the highest grades, a few commons from an early 1950s set can be valued at more than an entire set such as this, and when it comes time to sell, a set such as this will actually generate far more interest from collectors as well, precisely because it is more affordable. We have selected six cards from this set to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 Robinson (VG/EX 50), 10 Burgess SP (Vg), 27 Campanella (EX+ 70), 37 Mathews (EX/NM 80), 41 Slaughter (Vg), 54 Feller (Gd), 61 Wynn SP (Vg), 62 Irvin (Vg-Ex), 76 Reese (Ex-Mt), 77 Mize (Vg-Ex), 78 Schoendienst (Vg), 81 Black SP (Ex), 82 Mantle (VG 40), 86 Martin (Ex), 104 Berra (Vg-Ex), 114 Rizzuto (Vg), 119 Sain SP (Vg), 138 Kell (Vg), 147 Spahn (Ex), 149 DiMaggio (Ex), 151 Wilhelm (Gd), 162 Kluszewski (Vg), 191 Kiner (Gd), 207 Ford (Vg), 220 Paige (VG/EX 50), 228 Newhouser (Ex), 244 Mays (deemed Authentic due to recoloring in the lower right corner, otherwise Gd), 246 Face (Vg), 254 Roe (Vg), 258 Gilliam SP (Vg), 263 Podres SP (Vg-Ex), 264 Woodling (Ex), 265 Jensen SP (Vg-Ex), 273 Haddix SP (Ex), 280 Bolling (Vg). This is an exceptionally attractive set, far above average for this issue, with tremendous eye-appeal across the board. Total: 274 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,994
