1949 Leaf #8 Satchel Paige Rookie Card - SGC EX/NM 80

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $9,400

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. Offered is an extraordinary high-grade pack-fresh example of 1949 Leaf #8 Satchel Paige. One of card collecting's great classics and important rarities, Satchel Paige’s Leaf rookie card has long been universally recognized as one of the most significant of all postwar baseball cards. In 1948/1949 Chicago's Leaf Gum Company produced the first multicolor baseball cards of the post-World War II era. Forty-nine cards in the set are considered "standard" (not rare compared to "short print" cards) and the additional "short print" series of forty-nine cards in the set are so rare that "Rare Leafs" has long been a formal card-collecting hobby term. Satchel Paige happens to be one of the rare cards in the set, so it is highly prized both as an extremely rare card of the legendary Satchel Paige and as the key rare card in the Leaf set. The 1949 Leaf card is also Paige’s most valuable. This is an outstanding high-grade example. The card is bright and clean, with four square corners showing just a slight hint of wear (a little more on the bottom left) and bold colors. Centered 55/45 left to right and 70/30 top to bottom (centering and minor registration issues are very common problems encountered with this series). The back is off-center (15/85 L/R and 90/10 T/B) with text perfectly crisp and clean. This card presents a rare opportunity to acquire an extremely attractive and very high grade example of one of the most revered classics of all postwar baseball cards. The equivalent SMR value is $8,000. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $9,400
