1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson Portrait - PSA NM 7

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,528

Graded NM 7 by PSA. One of only six examples graded at this level by PSA, with just one graded higher. Bright, crisp, clean example of one of the truly great Jackie Robinson cards, and one that in our opinion is a classic that is deserving of a place of honor in any world-class card collection. Dating from 1947, this card represents Robinson's true rookie card. This card has a unique design in the thirteen-card 1947 Jackie Robinson Bond Bread set. This is the only card in the set that features a biography along with advertising on the reverse. In the 1970s a find of approximately seventy-five high-grade examples of this card "walked in" at a New York convention. This card is almost certainly from that find. The father of the gentleman who had the cards (and sold them at the show) owned a grocery store in the 1940s, and brought the cards home for his son, who was then a youngster. Because of this long-ago find and accompanying story, we have always thought that this uniquely designed card in the set may have been given out at stores directly by grocers at the checkout counter, as a special advertising vehicle when the set was announced, as opposed to being issued one card per loaf (as was the case with the other twelve cards in the set, each of which has advertising-only reverses). This is an extremely historic card, Jackie Robinson's true rookie card, dating from his earliest days in the Major League. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,528
