1947 D323 Tip Top Bread Near-Complete Set (153/163)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,875

Near-complete set of 153 different (of the 163 in set) 1947 Tip Top Bread cards, highlighted by Hall of Famers Yogi Berra rookie, Phil Rizzuto, Warren Spahn rookie, and Honus Wagner. Missing only ten cards for completion (Christopher, Hodgin, Kennedy, Mayo, Rigney, Schmitz, Sturgeon, Tresh, Tucker, and Wallaesa). The 1947 Tip Top Bread set is one of the most difficult-to-complete of all regional issues. In addition to being issued only one card per loaf of bread, the set is all the more difficult to complete as it is really comprised of eleven different regionally-issued team subsets. The Cardinals were issued only in St. Louis; the Cubs were issued only in Chicago, etc. The 1947 Tip Top Bread set is comprised of players from eleven different teams (Red Sox, White Sox, Tigers, Yankees, Browns, Braves, Dodgers, Cubs, Giants, Pirates, and Cardinals). Some teams are far more difficult to locate than others. In the early days of organized collecting, Tip Top Bread cards were a favorite of extremely advanced collectors due to their rarity, the challenge they presented to collect, and the fact that many players appeared in few (in some cases no) other sets. For some reason, Tip Tops have not appreciated as much as many other cards since the 1970s. Perhaps the reason is that the reprints of this set that have been produced are difficult for some to distinguish from real cards, or maybe it is that they cannot be found in Mint condition in a modern collecting world that values grading so highly, or simply that regional issues do not have the same high degree of focus for as many advanced collections in the modern era. But they are as rare and as significant as ever! A near-complete set such as this is very rarely seen. We believe that fewer than ten complete Tip Top Bread sets have ever been assembled in the history of collecting. In fact, this is the first time we have ever offered a near-set of 1947 Tip Top Breads. Condition is very respectable for Tip Tops (which due to their method of issue are rarely found in high grade): 27% of the cards range from Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt (with a few Ex), 33% range from Vg to Vg-Ex, and 40% range from Pr to Gd (mostly Fr). Keys (organized by team): D. DiMaggio (Vg), Doerr (Ex-Mt), Lopat (Ex), Kell (Gd), Berra (Fr), Henrich (Ex), Reynolds (Fr), Rizzuto (Vg/Vg-Ex), Spahn (Fr), Branca (Nr/Mt), Lombardi (Vg-Ex), Mize (Vg), Kiner (Gd), Wagner (Gd-Vg), Garagiola (Pr), and Slaughter (Vg-Ex/Ex). This remarkable collection for Tip Top Bread cards, just ten cards short of completion, was assembled over a period of decades by a old-time pioneer collector. This is a very substantial collection of this scarce 1940s regional issue. Total: 153 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $5,875
