Vintage "Game in Progress" Baseball Postcard Collection (150)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,175

Collection of 150 real-photo postcards, each picturing a baseball game in progress. The overwhelming majority of these postcards date from between 1900 and 1920 and capture our national game in its purest form. No Major League contests are depicted here. Instead we see local town teams, youth leagues, factory teams, and a even a few "pick nine" teams playing on grounds that range from well-manicured fields with grandstands to makeshift diamonds in the middle of farm land. One of the cards even pictures the "Lake Placid Club" enjoying a snowy game of winter ball on Mirror Lake! Many of the locations are identified in print on the front and even with just a quick perusal we can see numerous towns represented here from all over the country, including Osceola, Nebraska; Bayard, Louisiana; Sequim, Wisconsin; Paulina, Oregon; Hutchinson, Kansas; Keene, New Hampshire; and Worcestor, Massachusetts, among many others. A number of postcards also picture games from various locals in Canada. Collections like this are always fun to research and we would not be surprised to find that this grouping ultimately yields a number of hidden "gems." A few of the postcards are colorized examples and approximately forty percent have been inscribed and mailed. The majority of the cards displays normal handling wear commensurate with their age and former use. In Very Good condition overall, with just a few displaying significant flaws. This is an outstanding and high-quality collection unto itself including many extremely fascinating rarities. From the Ron Menchine Collection. Total: 150 postcards. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,175
