1941 Play Ball Complete Set (72)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,350

Extremely attractive mid-grade complete set of the 1941 Play Ball series issued by Gum, Inc., one of card collecting's all-time classic gum issues. The cards range in grade from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex), with a few in slightly lesser condition (Gd), and just a few with a Vg-Ex or Ex appearance but with a slight trim. This full-color seventy-two-card set includes many Hall of Famers and stars, including Joe DiMaggio (PSA VG-EX 4) and Ted Williams. Keys: #1 Miller (Vg), 6 Hubbell (Vg/Vg-Ex), 8 Ott (Vg), 10 Vaughan (PSA VG-EX 4), 13 Foxx (Vg-Ex on the front, the back has writing in blue ink), 14 Williams (Vg), 15 Cronin (Ex), 18 Greenberg (slight trim), 19 Gehringer (slight trim ), 20 Ruffing (slight trim), 39 Henrich (Ex), 54 Reese RC (Vg), 60 Klein (Vg-Ex), 61 V. DiMaggio (Vg-Ex), 63 D. DiMaggio (Vg), 64 Doerr (Vg), 70 Dickey (Vg), 71 J. DiMaggio (PSA VG-EX 4), and 72 Gomez (Vg). One additional card has been graded by SGC: #47 (VG/EX 50). One of the great things about card collecting is that the classic card sets can be collected in any condition, on any budget. This set was assembled with an eye for both visual appeal and value. It is a very attractive set across the board, with many highlights, offers an outstanding collecting value, and of course is a relatively much more affordable alternative to a higher-grade set of this very popular prewar gum issue. It is easy to see why high-quality prewar sets in this mid-grade are always in high demand. The SMR value for just the two PSA-graded cards (#10 Vaughan and 71 DiMaggio, not including the one SGC-graded card and 69 ungraded cards) is $950. Total: 72 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,350
