1940 R335 Play Ball #225 Joe Jackson - SGC NM/MT 88

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $3,525

Graded NM/MT 88 by SGC. One of only three examples graded at this extraordinary level by SGC, with none graded higher. This extremely desirable 1940 Play Ball rare high-number series card features the legendary Joe Jackson. Unfortunately for collectors, few vintage cards of Joe Jackson exist. This 1940 Play Ball card is one of the few and one of vintage-card collecting's great classics. It is particularly fascinating that, although it was issued when the memory of the "Black Sox" scandal was still very fresh in the minds of baseball fans, the reverse of the card only makes great note of the fact that "Shoeless Joe" Jackson was one of the greatest hitters of all time while completely ignoring the scandal; in fact, it simply states that "he stopped playing after the 1920 season." This is a spectacular ultra high-grade example of one of Joe Jackson's most classic cards. Four razor-sharp corners, flawless picture quality, with natural, even toning, a perfectly clean reverse, and very well centered for this issue, just a hint to the right border. This card is a gem! The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grade is $7,250. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $3,525
