1940 Play Ball Complete Set (240)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819
Presented is a rarely offered and extremely consistent complete set of the classic 1940 Play Ball set issued by Gum, Inc. With all the Hall of Famers, current and past, and rare high-number series cards (#181 thru 240), the number of noteworthy cards in this set rivals the number of common cards. 1940 Play Ball has always been a difficult set, and the rarity of complete sets has been underappreciated. It is also a set that has become even rarer in complete form in recent years, in part due to its extraordinary break value, and the inclusion of several particularly high-value key cards (among them Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Joe Jackson, two of which are in Vg-Ex and Ex condition in this set). We have selected eight cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 DiMaggio (SGC FAIR 20), 6 Gomez (Fr), 7 Dickey (Vg), 10 Ruffing (no right border, otherwise Ex), 21 Ferrell (Pr), 27 Williams (SGC VG/EX 50; popular second-year card, downgraded from Ex for a little too much corner wear, no creases), 30 Berg (Vg-Ex), 38 Doerr (Vg-Ex), 40 Greenberg (SGC VG/EX 50), 41 Gehringer (Ex), 46 Averill (Vg-Ex), 87 Hubbell (Vg), 88 Ott (Gd-Vg), 102 Klein (Fr), 104 P. Waner (Vg-Ex), 105 L. Waner (Fr), 107 Vaughan (Vg), 118 Hoyt (Fr), 119 Alexander (Vg-Ex), 120 Johnson (SGC VG 40), 124 Combs (10/90 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 129 Harris (no left border, otherwise Ex), 132 Mack (Vg), 133 Foxx (SGC GOOD 30), 134 Cronin (Fr-Gd), 141 Stengel (Fr), 142 Kelly (Ex), 153 McKechnie (Pr), 158 T. Jackson (10/90 L/R, otherwise Ex), 167 Frisch (Vg-Ex), 168 Wagner (SGC GOOD 30), 170 Speaker (Vg-Ex), 171 Heilmann (5/95 L/R, otherwise Vg), 172 Bender (Fr), 173 Lajoie (5/95 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 174 Evers (Fr), 175 Mathewson (SGC VG/EX 50), 176 Manush (Fr), 177 Baker (Vg), 178 Carey (Pr), 179 Sisler (Vg-Ex), 180 Cochrane (Fr), 223 Jennings (95/5 L/R, otherwise Ex), 224 Traynor (10/90 L/R, otherwise Ex), 225 "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (SGC EX 60; the card displays honest light corner wear, with a brilliant image, and centered just a hint to the right), 226 Hooper (90/10 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 227 Haines (Vg-Ex), 230 Faber (Fr), 232 Goslin (no right border, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), 234 Chance (Gd), 235 McGraw (Vg), 236 Bottomley (ink on front, otherwise Ex-Mt), 237 Keeler (Vg-Ex), and 238 Lazzeri (Vg). The balance of the cards grade as follows: 60% range from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex overall), and 40% range from Fr to Gd-Vg (with a few slightly lesser). Technically the set falls into the low- to mid-grade category, but has an overall presentation of a much more expensive and higher-grade set. Vintage sets in this grade are especially desirable, representing perhaps the most outstanding and least volatile value in the world of vintage cards. The equivalent SMR value for just the eight SGC-graded cards (not including the 232 ungraded cards!) is $2,360. Total: 240 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000++. SOLD FOR $3,819
