1888 N28 Allen Ginter SGC-Graded Complete Set of Baseball Players Minus 1 (9 of 10)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,994

1888 N28 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" collection of nine baseball players (out of ten ballplayers in the set) all graded by SGC, including many in high grade, and missing only Anson for completion. (The Anson originally accompanied the set but has been separated to be offered as its own lot due to its extraordinarily high grade.) Among the nine cards offered here are five Hall of Famers (Clarkson, Comiskey, Keefe, Kelly, and Ward). SGC Condition Report: Chas. Bennett (VG/EX 50), R. L. Caruthers (EX+ 70), John Clarkson (VG/EX 50, flawless image centered to the left), Charles Comiskey (VG 40, no creases and a few tiny stains in the background), Jack Glasscock (EX/NM 80), Tim Keefe (EX 60, Ex-Mt appearance, downgraded due to a little too much edge and corner wear), Mike Kelly (GOOD 30, front is Vg, downgraded due to a glue stain on the reverse), Joseph Mulvey (EX 60), and John Ward (VG 40, light crease from the tip of the bat to Ward's right ear, light stains on the reverse). Allen & Ginters are widely recognized as one of the most classic of all pre-1900 issues. This is a very attractive complete set (minus one card) of this extremely popular nineteenth-century issue, with many cards having an overall appearance far superior to the technically accurate assigned grades. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grades is $4,370 (there is no SMR value for EX+ 5.5 grades, so the one example graded at this level was calculated with the EX 5 value). Total: 9 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,994
