1937 R342 Goudey Thum Movies Pack with #10 Paul Waner

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,175

Unopened pack of 1937 Goudey Thum Movies. While most collectors are familiar with Goudey's popular series of Thum Movies issued in 1937, for all these years it was never clear to us exactly exactly how they were issued. It was only because of the discovery of this incredible unopened pack, which was one of the highlights of REA's 2009 unopened pack find, that we finally have the answer. The flip books were packaged in a paper sleeve wrapper along with a piece of gum (wrapped very snugly, so the flipbook and the gum could not easily slide out). The multicolor paper reads "Thum Movies" and bears a preprinted price of two cents. We have taken the liberty of very carefully sliding the booklet out to peek at its number, noting that it is number "10" Paul Waner. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only 1937 Goudey Thum Movies pack to have survived complete with its original packaging. The gum is very substantial, the same dimensions as the flipbook. The pack displays only the lightest handling wear, appearing exactly as it did when it was packaged for sale by Goudey in 1937. This pack originally appeared as Lot 1545 in REA's May 2009 auction, where it realized a final sales price of $3,231. Our consignor received this item in trade directly from the original purchaser. We believe this is the only 1937 Goudey Thum Movies unopened pack in existence! Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
