1936 V355 World Wide Gum #51 Joe DiMaggio Rookie

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819

Graded VG 3 by PSA. Do not be fooled by the modest PSA grade on this card! It has a far superior appearance to its technically accurate grade! Extremely attractive mid-grade example of Joe DiMaggio's Major League rookie card from this rare, unusual, and very substantial 1930s Canadian Goudey issue. This is an exceptionally attractive example of one of the most classic and sought-after of all Joe DiMaggio cards. The card displays a crisp, perfectly focused image, and virtually perfect centering. The card has corner wear, a few tiny age spots around DiMaggio's face, and no creases. This card appears Ex but has been downgraded due to light surface abrasions along the top and bottom edges on the reverse (almost certainly the result of long ago being affixed to an album page with a tiny bit of glue and years later carefully removed). The reverse is stain-free with bold black text printed in both English and French. We have always been particularly amused at the use of DiMaggio's long forgotten nickname ("Deadpan Joe") which appears prominently on the back of this card. He earned this nickname during his record-setting hitting streaks in the PCL, but it didn't follow him to the majors, except here, on DiMaggio's first Big League World Wide Gum card. This is a very unusual, rarely offered, and extremely desirable grade for this classic card, providing a relatively affordable alternative to a far more expensive high-grade example. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $3,819
