1936 R312 National Chicle Premiums Complete Set: #1 PSA Registry! (50)

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $4,406

Presented is the finest complete 50-card set of 1936 R312 National Chicle Premiums ever assembled. This is the number-one All-Time Finest set on the PSA registry. The PSA set registry GPA of 4.68 is particularly extraordinary for these very condition-sensitive oversized premiums (which as collectors are well aware are so harshly graded by PSA). Thirty-nine of these cards are the highest- or second-highest graded examples in the entire PSA Population Report. This set includes twenty-six Hall of Famers. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. The set includes four EX-MT 6s, twenty-five EX 5s, five VG-EX+ 4.5s, and sixteen VG-EX 4s. This set has been assembled by an extremely dedicated collector over a period of many years. This full-color (4 x 5-3/8 inches) premium set is comprised of twenty-five individual player portraits, fourteen multiplayer cards, and eleven in-action photos. The beautiful, rich pastel colors of R312 premiums make them one of the most striking and distinctive of all 1930s issues. Considering how substantial they are, R312 premiums have received very little attention from collectors, in part due to the fact that they are larger than standard cards, and therefore have only recently begun to be encapsulated by grading services. In addition to being one of the most beautiful sets of the 1930s, a case could be made that they represent one of the best values among all 1930s issues. The key card from the R312 set features the great Joe DiMaggio. This is one of DiMaggio's earliest cards featuring him with the Yankees. Additional Hall of Famers featured in the set include Hank Greenberg, Rogers Hornsby, Honus Wagner, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, and Tris Speaker, among others (twenty-six HOFers total). In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. The PSA grades are as follows: Four EX-MT 6: #25 Frey, 30 Haas/Kreevich/Walker, 33 Hartnett/Warneke (HOF), and 36 Lombardi (HOF). Twenty-five EX 5: #1 Allen, 2 Altrock/Schact, 3 Bejma/Hemsley, 5 Blanton, 7 Bordagaray/Earnshaw, 9 Camilli, 11 Herman/etc. (HOF), 12 Cochrane (HOF), 14 R. Collins, 15 Cronin/Harris (HOF), 17 Cuyler (HOF), 19 Dickey (HOF), 21 Dressen, 27 Gomez/Hoag (HOF), 28 Greenberg (HOF), 31 Harder, 34 Hornsby (HOF), 37 Lopez (HOF), 39 Mize (HOF), 40 Mungo, 43 Ruffing (HOF), 46 Sullivan, 47 Swift, 48 Wagner/Vaughan (HOF), and 49 Waners (HOF). Five VG-EX+ 4.5: #8 Brown, 16 Crowder, 26 Traynor/Galan (HOF), 35 Hornsby/Sothoren (HOF), and 42 Rowe. Sixteen VG-EX 4: #4 Bell/Bonura, 6 Bolton/Whitehill, 10 Hartnett/Herman/Klein/etc. (HOF), 13 Collins/Hack (holder is cracked), 18 Cuyler/Speaker (HOF), 20 DiMaggio (HOF, it is interesting to note DiMaggio’s name is misspelled “DiMagio” on this card), 22 Ferrell (HOF), 23 Goslin/etc. (HOF), 24 Foxx/Sewell (HOF), 29 Grove/Mack (HOF), 32 Hartnett/Cochrane (HOF), 38 Martin, 41 Parmelee, 44 Schott, 45 Stengel (HOF), and 50 Winegarner. It is not surprising that many of the premiums in this collection have an even stronger appearance than their already impressive grades, as R312s tend to be harshly graded by PSA. The consignor has invested years in upgrading and assembling this set with the express purpose of putting together the finest complete set. He has succeeded! This is the All-Time Finest set in the world of these classic 1930s premiums. Total: 50 premiums. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+. SOLD FOR $4,406
