1928 Exhibits Complete Set (64) Including Ruth and Gehrig

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,233

Complete set of sixty-four cards from the classic 1928 Exhibits series. This set is highlighted by nineteen Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The 1928 set was the last Exhibit card set of the 1920s to feature one player per card. In 1929 the Exhibit Supply Co. of Chicago changed the design of its cards to feature four different players per card, all from the same team. (They returned to an individual-player format in 1939.) The 1928 Exhibits (3-3/8 x 5-3/8 inches) are easily identified by their blue tint, and are blank-backed or seen with a printed or stamped corner coupon on the reverse. Complete sets of Exhibit cards from the 1920s are extremely rare. This set is part of an extraordinary comprehensive Exhibit card collection, assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced pioneer collector, that is being offered in a number of smaller lots (mostly by year) in this auction. Keys: Alexander (Gd), Bancroft (Vg), Carey (Vg), Cochrane (Gd), Frisch (Ex), Gehrig (ink stamp on back, otherwise Vg-Ex), Goslin (Gd), Harris (Gd), Hartnett (Vg), Hornsby (Vg-Ex), Lindstrom (Fr), Lyons (Fr), Roush (Ex), Ruth (Pr), Sewell (Gd), Simmons (Pr), Vance (Gd), P. Waner (Pr), and H. Wilson (Gd). The balance of the cards range from Good to Vg-Ex (with a couple lesser). Most have been downgraded for writing (pencil or ink) on the back. As can easily be seen from the images provided, even the lower-graded cards have tremendous visual appeal, in most cases far better than suggested by their technical grades. Exhibits are extremely substantial, far rarer than many other cards from the era, and represent an extraordinary collecting value for quality cards from the 1920s. Total: 64 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,233
