1927 W560 Playing Cards Near-Complete Set (56/64) Including Gehrig

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,058

Near-complete set of fifty-six (out of 64) 1927 W560 Playing Cards. This is an extremely high grade near-set. 85% range from Ex to Nr/Mt, 15% Vg to Vg-Ex (with a couple slightly lesser). Missing only eight cards for completion (including Ruth and Foxx). This set was issued on four uncut sheets, each featuring sixteen cards, and were intended to be cut up by hand to create a playing-card deck, as offered here. This near-complete set includes forty-six of the forty-nine baseball players (including Gehrig from his most legendary season, as well as numerous other Hall of Famers, including Walter Johnson at the end of his career) plus ten additional prominent sporting figures of the day. Keys: Bottomley (Ex-Mt), Cochrane (Gd), Cuyler (Ex-Mt), Gehrig (Ex-Mt), Goslin (Vg), Grove (Ex), Haines (Ex), Hornsby (Nr/Mt), Hoyt (Ex-Mt), Johnson (Ex), Lindstrom (Nr/Mt), Pennock (Vg-Ex), Simmons (Ex), Vance (Nr/Mt), L. Waner (Vg-Ex), P. Waner (Ex-Mt). W560 is a very substantial set. It also represents one of the very few sets issued in the late 1920s, and includes the first-issued cards of many players. W560 cards are beginning to be recognized for the outstanding value they represent compared with most other vintage cards. Total: 56 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,058
