1924 V122 Willards Chocolates Baseball SGC VG 40 Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,880

Outstanding bright and clean examples of Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, the two key baseball players, from the unusual and scarce 1924 V122 Willard’s Chocolates set, each graded and encapsulated VG 40 by SGC. This 56-card multisport Canadian candy issue features only three baseball players (Ruth, Cobb, and Collins). These black-and-white cards (1-3/8 x 3-3/8 inches) are printed on thin cardboard stock with blank backs, and feature images that are unique to this set. 1) #5 Babe Ruth (Very attractive card of Babe Ruth displaying a sharp, clear image, with slightly rounded corners, and a horizontal crease on the top portion of the reverse. This is an unusual card which, in addition to featuring an image that appears on no other card, identifies Ruth under his name as the "Home Run Champion"). 2) #39 Ty Cobb (Bright and clean image, with light wear to the corners, a few minor creases, and centered to the right). No one will ever confuse V122 Willard's with any other card issue, and the fact that they date from the mid-1920s, an era with very few baseball-card issues, is another important distinction of the set. This is an impressive pair of two key Hall of Famers from one of the most unusual sets from the 1920s. Total: 2 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,880
