Lot # 600 (of 1743)   < Previous Lot | Next Lot >

1923 W515-1 Complete Set (60)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,880

This classic set of 1920s strip cards features twenty-one Hall of Famers, including #3 Ruth (Ex-Mt), 10 Cobb (Pr, missing top right corner), 24 Stengel (Ex-Mt), 28 Speaker (Ex), 38 W. Johnson (Ex-Mt), and 47 Ruth (Ex). Fifty-five cards range from Ex to Ex-Mt condition (with a few Nr/Mt); the remaining five cards are in Poor condition. These colorful cards are referred to as "strip cards" because they were originally issued in uncut sheets or "strips" and were cut apart, as intended, with scissors. In the early days of the organized hobby, strip cards did not "get any respect." It is only in recent years that collectors have begun to appreciate the distinctive look and tremendous value these cards represent. Total: 60 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,880
