1922 E120 American Caramel - Series of 240 Near-Complete Set (208 of 240)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,581

This rarely offered low- to mid-grade near-complete set of 1922 E120 American Caramel (Series 240) cards includes 208 of the 240 cards in the set, highlighted by twenty-four Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson. Grades 25% Ex to Ex-Mt, 39% Vg to Vg-Ex, 19% Gd to Gd-Vg, 17% lesser (with a few of the lesser-grade cards trimmed). Missing the following thirty-two cards for completion: Adams, Alexander, Bush, E. Collins, P. Collins, Courtney, Coveleski, DeBerry, Duncan, Dykes, Flagstead, Frisch, Gharrity, Gillespie, Goslin, Grimm, Jamison, McHenry, Ruether, Ruth, Severid, Sewell, Shawkey, Sisler, S. Smith, Sothoron, Speaker, Statz, Tobin, Traynor, Wood, and Youngs. The E120 American Caramel Company set issued in 1922 is universally recognized as the most classic set from the 1920s. The E120 set’s 240 cards make it the only comprehensive set of the era and its striking design makes it one of the most attractive baseball-card sets of any era. The set features fifteen members from each of the sixteen Major League teams. All the players are pictured in full-length poses. The National Leaguers are printed in a green tone; the American Leaguers in a sepia tone. This near-set is remarkably clean and attractive. A total of seventy-two cards have been graded by PSA. EX-MT 6 (10 cards): Bayne, Bohne, Hauser, Leverette, McQuillan, Moore, Oeschger, Peters, Phillips, and Sherdel. EX 5 (36 cards): Ainsmith, Barnes, Bigbee, Blue, Boeckel, Cole, Cox, Cunningham, Danforth, Fillingim, Fletcher, Fuhrman, B. Harris, S. Harris (HOF), Hasty, Heilmann (HOF), W. Jacobson, S. Johnson, W. (Doc) Johnson, D. Jones, Karr, G. Kelly (HOF), Krug, Maranville (HOF), Menosky, Neale, Nehf, Parkinson, Picinich, Powell, Pratt, Roush (HOF), Toney, Wingo, Wrightstone, and Zachary. VG-EX+ 4.5 (1 card): Devormer. VG-EX 4 (18 cards): Baker (HOF), Bassler, Burns, Clemons, Cutshaw, Davis, Douglas, Hamilton, Hornsby (HOF), Meadows, Pennock (HOF), Pertica, Rice (HOF), Rigney, Schang, Shinners, Snyder, and Wheat (HOF). VG 3 (1 card): Carey (HOF). GOOD 2 (6 cards): Barbare, Caveney, Cheeves, Groh, B. Jones, and Rixey (HOF). Ungraded HOFers (12 cards): Bancroft (PR), Cobb "Cob" (pinhole at the top, otherwise Gd), Faber (Pr), Grimes (Gd), Haines (Vg), Hartnett (Fr), Hooper (Fr-Gd), Hoyt (Fr), Johnson (two pieces of clear tape on the front, otherwise Vg), Marquard (Gd), Schalk (Fr), and Southworth (Fr-Gd). E120s are almost never found in set or even near-set form. They could only be collected one card at a time by buying packs of American Caramel. They were never offered by the company in complete-set form, and with 240 cards to collect a complete set was a great challenge even in 1922. Assembling a set today, while theoretically possible, would be an even greater challenge and might be considered somewhat impractical by most collectors. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a near-complete set of 208 different cards (out of 240 in the set) of this all-time classic 1920s baseball-card issue. With twenty-four Hall of Famers, this near-set may also have a tremendous break value. Total: 208 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $5,581
