1922 E120 American Caramel Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,350

Extremely sharp E120 American Caramel of Babe Ruth, the key card from this distinctive early 1920s caramel issue. Ruth is featured in full uniform holding a baseball in his right hand. This card was purchased by our consignor in a Wolffers Auction (no longer in business) in the early 1990s (described as Mint and at the time realizing $7,150). This card was very carefully chosen for purchase by our consignor in the early days of collecting before the advent of professional grading, precisely due to its outstanding condition. We submitted this card to PSA for grading along with various other prewar cards from our consignor's collection. While many of the cards came back with well-deserved strong numerical grades (EX 5s, EX-MT 6s, NM 7s, and NM-MT 8s), it was PSA's opinion that this card has a subtle trim. The offered card is bright and clean, both front and back, with four sharp corners, and flawless image clarity. The card has a Nr/Mt or better appearance, but, as noted, in PSA's opinion it has been very slightly trimmed. The trimming is very subtle and is impossible to detect without a trained eye. While this card will never be numerically graded by PSA, it is still a very attractive and desirable card and potentially represents an extraordinary value for the collector who wants a beautiful original ungraded example of this classic, at a far more affordable level than a numerically graded example with a similar appearance. This is a very attractive E120 American Caramel Company example of Ruth issued during his third year with the Yankees. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,350
