1920s Uncut Strip Card Collection (190 cards on 9 sheets) Including Ruth and Cobb

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,763

Offered are nine uncut sheets representing four different styles of strip cards from the 1920s, each presented in its original as-issued uncut form. The period between the 1910 tobacco-card era and the introduction of bubble-gum cards in the 1930s was relatively quiet among card manufacturers, despite the fact that those years witnessed Ruth's prime, as well as the rise of Gehrig, and a host of other eventual Hall of Famers. Many players in these sets appear in few other issues. For some players, the strip cards are their only appearance on a baseball card. With few exceptions, cards from the "Roaring Twenties" are not plentiful. Though they are not known for their extraordinary production quality, they do represent an important and often overlooked era in card collecting and are beginning to be recognized for the outstanding value they represent compared with most other vintage cards. 1) 1926 W512: Two uncut sheets, each featuring twenty-five cards, representing the complete set, plus one duplicate sheet, for a total of three sheets. The sheets feature ten baseball players (#1-10), each in the top row including Cobb and Ruth. The balance of the sheets feature cards of other sporting stars (including Bill Tilden, Walter Hagen, and Johnny Weismuller), actors, and ten boxers (including Dempsey and Tunney). Ruth is situated in the upper left corner and is technically about Fr. The sheets are missing corners, have light creases, and minor edge tears. The colors are strong and many of the interior cards are Nr/Mt-Mt. 2) 1925 W504 Universal Toy Brooklyn Dodgers: uncut sheet of seventeen cards includes the complete set of sixteen Brooklyn Dodgers players plus team card. 5.5 x 13 inches. Missing the lower left corner, otherwise Vg+. Also included is a four-card panel cut from a sheet (card numbers #113, 105, 111, and 106). 3) 1927 W560 Playing Cards: Three uncut sheets, each featuring sixteen cards, representing a near-complete set (three of the four sheets comprising the set, missing just the Gehrig sheet for completion). These cards were intended to be cut up to create a playing-card deck. The set includes forty-nine baseball players (including Ruth) plus a few additional prominent sporting figures of the day (Jack Dempsey, Ken Strong, etc.). Interior cards including Ruth are Nr/Mt-Mt. The Ruth sheet has light corner creases in the upper left and moderate corner wear, still overall in Excellent condition. The other two sheets are technically Fair, but each has a much better appearance. 4) 1928 W513: Two uncut sheets, each featuring twenty-five cards, representing the complete set. This set is a continuation of the W512 series, which is also offered in this collection. The sheets feature twenty-six baseball players (#61-86), each in the three middle rows including twelve Hall of Famers. The remaining cards on the sheets feature cards of famous pilots (including Charles Lindbergh) and fourteen boxers. One sheet is missing the lower left corner, and the other sheet has a couple missing pieces on the edges. The colors are strong and many of the interior cards are Nr/Mt-Mt. Total 194 cards on nine sheets plus one four-card strip. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $1,763
