1916 M101-4 Indianapolis Brewing Co. #182 Honus Wagner (1:1)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,763

Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Indianapolis Brewing is an exceedingly rare back for any M101-4, let alone for a key Hall of Famer such as Honus Wagner. This card is "1 of 1," with no other examples at any level graded by PSA. It is the first and only example of this extremely rare M101-4 variety of #182 Honus Wagner that we have ever seen. (Note: The only other Wagner example ever graded by any grading company is a VG 40 example graded by SGC.) The 1916 Indianapolis Brewing Co. set is identical in design to M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News (as is the case with all the M101-4 and M101-5 sets issued by various local establishments), but with advertising on the reverse for the "Indianapolis Brewing Co. – Indianapolis, Indiana." To put the rarity of this particular advertising back in perspective, in the entire history of PSA, it has graded a total of only twelve M101-4/5 examples with Indianapolis Brewing Company advertising backs. This is a great card with any back, but the advertising reverse in this case certainly does deserve prominent mention and potentially adds a very special dimension of interest as an unusual and extreme Honus Wagner rarity. This card, of course, is a classic with any advertising back. This card has a bright and crisp image, evenly rounded corners, and a few surface abrasions (mostly along the right border). The reverse advertisement for Indianapolis Brewing Company is bold and crisp. This is a very attractive low-grade example of an extreme rarity and would be a worthy addition to any Honus Wagner, extreme rarities, or vintage sample-card collection. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,763
