1922 Zeenut PCL Jim Thorpe

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,938

Graded POOR 10 by SGC. This extremely rare and desirable 1922 Zeenut card features the legendary Jim Thorpe at the age of 35 playing for the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League. This is one of only a handful of cards of Jim Thorpe issued during his baseball-playing days. In fact, this is the only card featuring Thorpe playing in the PCL (not many people are even aware that Thorpe played in the PCL after his major league career with the Giants). Thorpe appeared in just thirty-five games for Portland in 1922, but made a significant contribution by batting .308 with one home run, two triples, and three doubles. Despite the appropriately modest grade, primarily due to a small punch hole in the upper left and the letters "L. F." (referring to "Left Field") neatly written in the lower right, this is an extremely attractive example of one of the most classic and sought-after of all Jim Thorpe cards. The card has a crisp image, evenly rounded corners, several insignificant surface creases (none of which have any impact on the striking image), and some damage to the blank reverse (the year "1922" written in ink and an area of surface paper loss). Despite the flaws, this is still a very attractive example of this extremely rare and important card, and a relatively affordable alternative to a far more expensive high-grade example. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,938
