1917 Zeenut PCL Near-Complete Set (112/121) Including Calvo and Mensor

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,638

Near-complete set of 112 different (of the 121 in set as checklisted in The Standard Catalog ) 1917 Zeenut cards featuring Pacific Coast League players, highlighted by Jacinto Calvo and Ed Mensor. Missing only nine cards for completion (Baldwin, Chance [which is offered separately in this auction], Fournier, Hall/Los Angeles, Harstad, Miller/throwing, Terry, Vaughn, and Wilie). The 1917 Zeenut set is comprised of players from six different teams (Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Vernon). A near-complete set such as this is very rarely seen. In fact, this is the first time we have ever offered a near-set of 1917 Zeenuts. 10% of the cards are Nr/Mt, 55% range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (with a few Vg), and 35% range from Pr to Gd-Vg. This is a sharp-looking group! Keys: Burns (Gd), Calvo (Gd), Mensor (Vg-Ex), and Meusel (Vg). As is usually the case with Zeenuts, the coupon at the bottom of each card has been neatly clipped away, as intended, to be redeemed for valuable prizes. Also as is usually the case with Zeenuts, most of the cards have a far superior appearance than suggested by their technically accurate modest grades. This "comes with the territory" with Zeenuts. This 1917 Zeenut near-complete set is part of an extraordinary comprehensive Zeenut collection, the finest we have ever handled. The collection was assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced pioneer collector, and has been broken down by year into a number of smaller but still very substantial lots. Total: 112 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $7,638
