1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folder "Ty Cobb Steals Third" Cobb/Jennings

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,819

Graded EX-MT+ 6.5 by PSA. Of the 124 examples of this card graded to date, only seven examples have ever been graded higher by PSA. Exceptionally attractive high-grade example of the key classic Ty Cobb card from the T202 Hassan Triple Folders set. The "Ty Cobb Steals Third" center-panel card, with Ty Cobb and Hugh Jennings on the end panels, is the premier card featuring Cobb in the T202 set. In the eyes of most collectors, this is the card that defines the T202 set, the classic combination of center and end panels. T202 Triple Folders are one of the most condition sensitive prewar issues, and are often downgraded due to the most minute flaws that are characteristic of the issue. That is why a PSA EX-MT+ 6.5 Triple Folder is statistically a far better card, and often has a far superior appearance, than a PSA EX-MT+ 6.5 card from many other vintage sets. Even graded an impressive EX-MT+ 6.5, it appears to be very conservatively graded to our eye, and has obviously been downgraded due to extremely minute imperfections (perhaps a faint hint of a print line in the border). The card is bright, crisp, and clean, with four sharp corners, vibrant colors, and is centered just slightly to the left. This card (submitted for grading by REA) was very carefully chosen for purchase by our consignor in the early days of conventions in the 1980s, long before the advent of professional grading, precisely due to its outstanding condition. It is a gem! This strong high-grade key T202 example would be a worthy addition to any advanced tobacco, Ty Cobb, or classic prewar-card collection. The SMR value for a PSA EX-MT 6 is $3,500. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
