1911 T3 Turkey Red #9 Ty Cobb - PSA VG-EX 4

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $8,813

Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Presented is an extraordinary T3 of Ty Cobb, one of vintage-card collecting's most recognizable icons and the key card of the 1911 Turkey Red Tobacco cabinet-card series. This is an incredibly strong card for VG-EX. The only stronger T3 Cobb graded VG-EX we have ever seen was the Charlie Conlon example (Lot 370 in REA's May 2009 auction), which sold for $14,100. This card has a strong EX appearance but has been graded VG-EX due to a very light surface wrinkle (not easily seen) on the right border. Most VG-EX T3s (of any player), let alone examples of Ty Cobb, do not hold a candle to this card . Turkey Reds are considered by many to be the most beautiful and well made tobacco set ever issued. Cobb is not just the most valuable card in the set, it also one of the best known and popular of all Ty Cobb cards. This example is bright and clean, both front and back (checklist-style reverse), with bold colors, strong corners, no shading to the borders, and exceptional centering. As noted, there is a very light paper wrinkle on the right border. Technically in Vg-Ex condition, this beautiful card displays as strong Excellent condition. T3s rarely survive without serious condition problems (ranging from major creases, stains, and rounded corners, to pinholes and glue stains relating to their former display, as intended). This is a stunning high-grade example of card #9 Ty Cobb from the classic Turkey Red set, a card which has always and will always be in high demand. This particular card also represents a rare, conservatively graded relatively affordable alternative to a far more expensive higher-grade example without compromising at all on its display value. This is a very impressive example of one of card collecting’s most classic cards, in an extremely desirable grade. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $8,813
