1911 M116 Sporting Life Ty Cobb Pastel - SGC NM 84

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,231

Graded NM 84 by SGC. One of only two examples graded at this level by SGC, with only one example graded slightly higher (NM+ 86). Outstanding high-grade example of Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the M116 Sporting Life set, one of the most popular of all 1910-era issues. This is one of eight M116s that were among the highlights of a small but remarkable childhood collection of our consignor’s grandfather that included a complete set of six M110s and eight M116s. These cards have been carefully stored by the family since 1911! All new to the organized collecting world and presented in a total of eight lots in this auction. This is a gorgeous card. Bright and extremely clean both front and back. The corners are sharp with just the lower left showing the slightest bend at the extreme tip, keeping this card from a higher grade. The reverse is flawless, with the advertising for Sporting Life (rare "Over 300 Subjects" back) printed crisply and boldly in blue, and centered to the far left. The centering on the front is slightly towards the right border. This is a very attractive high-grade example of one of Ty Cobb's most classic cards. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grade is $5,000. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $3,231
