1902-1911 W600 Sporting Life Cabinet "Iron Man" Joe McGinnity (Rookie)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,645

Sharp-looking example of Hall of Famer "Iron Man" Joe McGinnity in uniform from the very popular W600 Sporting Life cabinet-card set. Two poses of McGinnity were issued during this time: in uniform and in street clothes. McGinnity was one of the greatest pitching legends of his era. As a rookie he won 28 games, and for the next decade he averaged 25 victories each season, pitching over 300 innings every year but one. He earned his nickname by on occasion pitching both ends of a doubleheader. This is an extremely bright and crisp card, both front and back, with even wear to the corners. No major creases (just a couple tiny corner creases mentioned for accuracy). Strong Excellent appearance. SGC encapsulated this card as "Authentic" as opposed to giving it a numerical grade because they have interpreted the cut of the card as having a very slight trim along the top and left edges. Upon extremely close examination under magnification, we do see what SGC is referring to regarding the edges. We are skeptical that this card is actually trimmed in the traditional sense (there may be some other unknown explanation for the ever-so-slight unusual cut), but concur that the non-numerical encapsulation is reasonable. W600 Sporting Life cabinet cards were available only by mail and they are universally recognized as among the most substantial and highest-quality baseball-card sets ever issued. This card presents a unique opportunity to acquire an exceptional example of one of Joe McGinnity’s rarest and most striking cards from one of the most desirable baseball-card sets of the era, potentially at a fraction of the cost of an example with a technically higher numerical grade. Outstanding Excellent appearance. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
