1911-1914 D304 Martens Bakery J. Frank Baker - SGC NM/MT+ 92

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $8,225

Graded NM/MT+ 92 by SGC. The D304 set is usually associated with advertising on the reverses for Brunners Bread, Butter Crust, and General Baking. Presented is an incredibly high-grade example of Hall of Famer Frank Baker from the D304 series, which features the extremely rare Martens Bakery advertising on its reverse. This example (along with two commons and one other Hall of Famer) was originally offered as Lot #296 in the April 2007 REA auction and was the prize of the four-card lot. These four cards were part of a very small group of D304 Martens Bakery cards (a total of just six cards) which were found by our consignor literally tucked within the pages of a book from the 1914 era. The cards had been protected for decades from all elements, perfectly preserved within the confines of the book. This explains how this card happened to have survived in such extraordinary condition. This card is a blazer! It is crisp and clean, with bright colors, flawless registration, four razor-sharp corners, and virtually perfect centering. Perfectly clean reverse with bold black printing. Similar in design to tobacco and candy cards of the era, D304s measure slightly larger than T206s, at 1.75 x 2.5 inches, and while not "on the radar" of most collectors, they are actually considerably rarer than most 1910-era "E" and "T" card issues. The fronts feature very attractive full-color illustrations, each of which is unique to this issue. This is a very rare and unusual card of Hall of Famer Frank Baker in outstanding high grade. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $8,225
