1909-1911 T206 Ty Cobb - Red Background

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,880

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Outstanding example of one of Cobb's most classic cards from the most popular set of the 1910-era. This card was one of the highlights from a very substantial, totally untouched collection of 1910-era tobacco cards consigned to this auction (all cards from this collection appear in several lots of the auction), that was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. The card is perfectly centered (just a hint to the right), with flawless registration, a deep red background, and four square corners (a little more wear on the upper left). The reverse is perfectly clean with a Sweet Caporal advertisement boldly printed in red. The card has an Ex-Mt appearance but has been downgraded by SGC due to a small diagonal crease in the lower left corner. This is a gorgeous example of one of Cobb's most striking cards, and with a much stronger appearance than its technically accurate assigned grade. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,880
