1909-1911 T206 Hall of Fame Collection Including Ty Cobb (4)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,233

Collection of four different T206 "White Border" tobacco cards, highlighted by Ty Cobb's bat-on-shoulder pose. These cards were very carefully chosen for purchase by our consignor in the early days of conventions in the 1980s, long before the advent of professional grading, precisely due to their outstanding condition. We submitted these cards to PSA for grading along with several other T206s and various other prewar cards from an old-time collection. While many of the cards came back with well-deserved strong numerical grades (EX 5s, EX-MT 6s, NM 7s, and NM-MT 8s), it was PSA's opinion that three of four cards in this group have a subtle trim. The collection consists of the following: Ty Cobb – bat on (Sovereign 350 back), John McGraw – glove at hip (Piedmont back), and Cy Young – portrait (Sweet Caporal back). Cards in this collection all have a Nr/Mt appearance, but, as noted, in PSA's opinion three of the four have been very slightly trimmed. The trimming is very subtle and is impossible to detect without a trained eye. While these cards will never be numerically graded by PSA, they do represent an extraordinary value for the collector who wants beautiful original ungraded examples of these classics, at a far more affordable level than graded examples with a similar appearance. The fourth T206 card is Hal Chase – holding trophy (GOOD 2, downgraded for what appears to be a very light ink stamp on the reverse; this is a gorgeous card that is otherwise Nr/Mt; Sweet Caporal back). This is a very attractive collection of original T206s, including Ty Cobb. Total: 4 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,233
