1909-1911 T206 Sherry Magie - Error

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,406

Encapsulated as "Authentic" by PSA. This example of T206 Magie, card collecting's most famous error card, has not been assigned a numerical grade by PSA due to the image background having been altered (the card has the appearance of an erasure mark in the background to the left of Magie's portrait); the card otherwise has a Fair appearance. One constant in card collecting is the fact that great rarities have a great appeal to collectors in all grades. Magie is one of the rarest cards in the T206 set, and along with Plank, Wagner, and of course the rare Doyle, is usually one of the last cards required by collectors to complete the T206 set. The Magie error card has been always recognized as one of card collecting's great rarities, since the days of Jefferson Burdick. (In fact, Burdick singled out the Magie as one of the significant T206 rarities in the original American Card Catalog .) Despite the condition problems, which include a few significant creases and heavily rounded corners, it is still an authentic example of this legendary T206 rarity, and extremely desirable as a relatively affordable alternative to a higher-grade example. The reverse of the card features an advertisement for Piedmont Cigarettes (150 Subjects, Factory No. 25). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $4,406
