1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramel Near-Complete SGC-Graded Set (21 of 25) Including Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $6,463
Near-complete set of E95 Philadelphia Caramel consists of twenty-one of the twenty-five cards in the set, including nine Hall of Famers, highlighted by Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Eddie Plank. Missing only four cards for completion: Devlin, Hoffman, McIntyre, and Willis. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by SGC. The SGC condition report is as follows: Nine VG 40: Carrigan, Ty Cobb (HOF), Eddie Collins (HOF), Krause, Lord, Reulbach, Honus Wagner (HOF), Willetts, and Wiltse. Six GOOD 30: Frank Chance (HOF), Johnny Evers (HOF), Leach, Maddox, Merkle, and Morgan. Four FAIR 20: Chief Bender (HOF), Sam Crawford (HOF), Doyle, and Ed Plank (HOF). Two POOR 10: Cicotte ("Black Sox" member) and Christy Mathewson (HOF). This 25-card set was issued in 1909 by the Philadelphia Caramel Co. of Camden, New Jersey. The E95 set was almost certainly inspired by the great success that tobacco companies were having with their cards. This set is of special significance in that the E95 artwork was not reissued by other manufacturers, a practice that was so widespread with other “E” card issues. The designs used in E95 are unique to the set. These cards have a very distinctive look to them and the artwork is definitely a cut above their rivals of the time. Due to the thin stock on which they are printed, E95 Philadelphia Caramel cards are rarely found in high grade. This collection has an impressive concentration of key Hall of Famers and represents a very substantial and relatively affordable start to collecting one of the era's most popular sets. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grades is $7,215. Total: 21 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000++. SOLD FOR $6,463
