1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Collection (3)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $823

Collection of three N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinets. All three cabinets have been neatly clipped along the bottom (missing the "Old Judge Cigarettes" advertisement). The collection consists of the following: 1) Denny Lyons, Philadelphia (#283-3 pose). 1888 copyright. Some fading but still a reasonably high quality image; a few scattered age spots and light foxing; in the upper right of the reverse there is a moisture stain and evidence of scrapbook removal including scrapbook paper attached. 2) John McCarthy, Kansas City (#302-1 pose). 1888 copyright. Extremely bold photo. The white letters of the name and copyright contrast extremely well. The lower left and right corners are clipped. The reverse has evidence of scrapbook removal (scrapbook paper is attached at bottom of reverse). 3) "Phenomenal" Smith, Philadelphia (#422-2 pose). 1888 copyright. Very strong image. The white letters of the name contrast poorly and are illegible. The reverse has evidence of scrapbook removal (paper attached at top and center). This group represents an interesting, unique, and relatively affordable opportunity for a collector to acquire three quality players, each with significant flaws but still attractive, from the N173 Old Judge Cabinet series, one of the rarest and most desirable of all nineteenth-century issues. Each measures approximately 4.25 x 6 inches. Total: 3 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $823
