1964 O-Pee-Chee Outer Limits Display Box
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $823
Addendum: Please note that this Outer Limits box is an O-Pee-Chee 36-count box which differs slightly from the 24-count Topps/Bubbles box.
Offered here is perhaps the finest The Outer Limits display box example that could possibly exist! In any condition, The Outer Limits is universally recognized as one of the scarcest and most desirable nonsports gum-card display boxes of the 1960s. In this case, however, the condition is impeccable and this is directly related to its unique and significant provenance: This box has never been assembled and was originally saved by Topps as a sample for its own files. After having been stored away for decades in perfect condition, it was later sold by the company on eBay shortly after opening the Topps Vault. Ideally, it is accompanied by a COA from the Topps Vault affirming its special provenance. Since this was a file copy, it was never used and remains in its original folded state. This extremely popular nonsport set issued by Topps (and credited to Topps trade name "Bubbles, Inc." on the reverse of each card, in case the subject matter offended parents) is based on the classic sci-fi television series. This issue naturally has broad appeal to both card, science fiction, pop culture, and television collectors. A red, handwritten notation, which is obviously an internal Topps inventory marking, appears on the bottom of the box. A strip of surface paper residue appears on the front exterior side panel and the bottom of the box as a result of its having once been mounted, and then later removed, from a Topps file scrapbook. The box could easily be reassembled and the scrapbook paper could easily be removed by a conservator if desired. The box has flawless colors which are noticeably brighter and bolder than we have ever seen on an Outer Limits box. Aside from the noted condition anomalies which are directly related to its unique provenance, the box is in Near Mint to Mint condition. 8 x 7 inches (folded). Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
