1963 Topps "Beverly Hillbillies" Uncut 1¢ Display-Box Proof Sheet

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $823

Rare uncut display-box proof sheet for the 1963 Topps "Beverly Hillbillies" set originating from the Topps Vault. This box design was produced to hold one-cent packs of "Beverly Hillbillies" cards. The colorful design incorporates two different photos of the famous Clampett clan. The first, featured on the lid, pictures Jed, Granny, Jethro, and Elly May posing together, while the second, displayed on the side, captures the foursome riding in their old jalopy. Original Beverly Hillbillies one-cent display boxes are scarce and uncut proof sheets of the boxes are rarer still. It is not known how many such sheets were pulled from the production lines, but the number is certainly very small. The reason for its survival is directly related to its provenance. This piece was originally saved by Topps as an example for its files, but was then later sold by the company shortly after opening the Topps Vault. Ideally, it is accompanied by a COA from the Topps Vault affirming its special provenance. The Beverly Hillbillies , which debuted in 1962, was a smash hit for CBS and therefore it was only natural that Topps chose to capitalize on its popularity by issuing a sixty-six card set based on the show the following year. The Beverly Hillbillies is one of the few television comedies that has stood the test of time and even today, close to fifty years later, it can still be seen in syndication, where it continues to entertain generation after generation of new fans. The sheet (21 x 28 inches) displays a few minor surface wrinkles. In Excellent condition overall. This is both a rare and extremely attractive display piece relating to one of the most popular of all 1960s Topps nonsport issues. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $823
