1935 R147 Schutter-Johnson "Tarzan and the Crystal Vault of Isis" PSA-Graded Complete Set (50)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,406

Extraordinary complete 50-card set of the extremely rare "Tarzan and the Crystal Vault of Isis" card set, issued by Schutter-Johnson Candy in one-cent packages of "Tarzan of the Apes Candy." All fifty cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. R147 Tarzan cards have always been recognized as one of the rarest and most highly regarded sets of the 1930s. This is a high-grade complete set with forty-six cards ranging from Vg-Ex to Nr/Mt condition, and only four cards in slightly lesser condition. The extreme scarcity of this set is probably due in part to the fact that Schutter-Johnson Candy was such a small company. However, Schutter-Johnson made every effort to impress by creating this exceptionally high quality card issue, which among all the sport and non sport sets they ever produced is unquestionably their premier card issue. The PSA grades are as follows: One NM 7: #3. One EX-MT+ 6.5: #15. Eight EX-MT 6: #7, 18, 20, 22, 35, 41, 44, and 47. Two EX+ 5.5: #16 and 23. Nineteen EX 5: #1, 2, 5, 10, 11, 13, 19, 24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 33, 37, 40, 42, 48, 49, and 50 (last card in set). Four VG-EX+ 4.5: #8, 26, 29, and 32. Eleven VG-EX 4: #4, 6, 9, 12, 17, 36, 38, 39 (MK), 43, 45, and 46. One VG 3: #14. Two GOOD 2: #21 and 31. One PR-FR 1: #34. All cards are bright and colorful, and most display much better eye appeal than even suggested by their impressive technically accurate assigned grades. This is an exceptional high-grade set, and only the second complete set we have ever offered of this extremely rare and popular 1930s nonsport series. Total: 50 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,406
