1933 R118 Dietz Gum "Presidents Play Bucks" Collection (72) Including Pocket Album

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $588

Collection of seventy-two assorted (25 different of 32 in the set not including denomination variations plus 47 duplicates) R118 "Presidents Play Bucks" issued by the Dietz Gum Co. of Chicago in 1933. One "Presidential Play Buck" was given free with each piece of one-cent Presidents Chewing Gum. "Presidents Play Bucks" are designed in the style of currency, and feature the first thirty-two Presidents of the United States, from George Washington through FDR. Each insert currency measures 5.25 x 2.25 inches and the front of each currency depicts a portrait image of the great leaders of our nation with a bio on the reverse. All the examples in this group have a vertical fold line down the center as issued and are in Excellent to Mint condition overall. This is a very strong group of these extremely striking and rare gum card-related items. The collection is comprised of the following (quantities in parentheses): Washington (7), Jefferson (5), Madison, Monroe, Jackson (2), Van Buren (2), W. Harrison (2), Tyler, Polk, Taylor, Fillmore (5), Pierce (2), Buchanan (3), Lincoln, A. Johnson (3), Grant, Hayes (3), Arthur, B. Harrison (3), T. Roosevelt, Wilson (4), Harding, Coolidge/$2 (2), Coolidge/$500 (2), Hoover/$1 (3), Hoover/$100 (4), and F. Roosevelt/"One Million" (10). This is an extremely attractive group with outstanding eye-appeal. Dietz Gum "Presidents Play Bucks" are one of the most unusual and fascinating of all nonsport sets, and are naturally highly prized by both historical collectors and 1930s nonsport gum-card collectors. The original "Pocket History Album" featuring then-current president Franklin Roosevelt on the front also accompanies. The "album," which was available as a special premium to youngsters who collected the full set of 32 presidents (as detailed on its reverse), is actually a fold-over cardboard container designed with a lock-tab to hold the currency and protect them from the elements. The box is very clean and impressive but does have a large tear where the lock-tab is inserted that does not affect its great display value. Total: 73 items (72 currencies, one original box). Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $588
