1932 Tattoo Orbit Chewing Gum Advertising Sign, Box Proof, and Wrappers (53 items)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,233

Rare collection of material, comprised of a window display, wrappers, display box inserts, and a display box proof sheet, issued in 1932 for Tattoo Orbit Chewing Gum. This incredible GEM MINT collection originates from a small but remarkably significant find of Tattoo Orbit Chewing Gum material that was discovered in 2010 and which originated directly from the sample files of the Wrigley Chewing Gum Company. (Wrigley owned the Tattoo Orbit gum line.) While the highlight of that find was the very small number of baseball-related advertising displays (in promotion of PR3 pins, R305 cards, and R308 cards), the balance of the material, related to the company's various gum and nonsport issues, is naturally also of great interest to collectors. Presented here is a fascinating collection of materials from the find.

As one can see here, the selling of chewing gum to children in 1932 was big business. With each different issue, companies hoped to entice buyers by offering prizes and/or novelties that were either enclosed in each package of gum, or could be redeemed by sending in wrappers. Counter boxes were colorful and elaborate in their design, all with the intent of standing out among the many competing confections. Window signs were also distributed to retailers in order to catch the eye of all who passed by. This amazing never-before-seen collection of material includes many promotional pieces associated with the 1932 Tattoo Chewing Gum issue, including complete sets of all three different wrappers. 1 ) The highlight of the group is a colorful window poster (8.5 x 14.25 inches) that both pictures and fully describes the three different types of prizes that kids could expect in each package of Tattoo Chewing Gum: Transfer Pictures, Wise Crack Stickers, and Initial Letters. Furthermore, the poster also informs kids that the wrappers themselves contain hidden amusements: "Be sure to look at the inside or reverse side of the Tattoo Gum wrappers. You will find your fortune printed there, or a section of a comic map of McGoofus Island, which comes in 12 pieces. There are many interesting things on the inside of these wrappers." This particular poster was intended to be displayed on the interior store window and features glue strips on the front along the top and bottom borders. The poster displays a horizontal and vertical fold, as issued, and is in Mint condition. 2-4 ) Complete sets of all three different gum wrappers featured in the 1932 Tattoo Chewing Gum issue. All of the wrappers (2 x 3.75 inches) are identical in design on the front (yellow; marked "T1") . What differentiates them is the printing on the reverse. As noted in the text of the window poster, the reverse of each wrapper featured either a picture of a ship, a fortune, or a comic map of McGoofus Island. Twelve different ships and twelve different maps were issued, while a total of twenty different fortunes were produced. Each set of wrappers is numbered on the reverse. This collection includes a complete set of each, for a total of forty-four different wrappers. Since these are file copies, all of the wrappers are unfolded and remain in Mint condition . 5 ) Collection of five blank-backed sample wrappers (2 x 3.75 inches). One is yellow (marked "T1"), two are blue (marked "T2"), and two are green (marked "T3"). Mint condition. 6 ) Display box proof sheet. The sheet (9 x 12.25 inches), printed on paper stock, features printer's marks in each corner and a 1932 copyright date. This design was used for the counter display boxes for Tattoo Chewing Gum, each of which held 100 packages of gum. The sheet displays a single horizontal fold, otherwise in Mint condition. 7 ) Colorful display box back panel piece. This piece (4.25 x 4 inches) was included in the display box and was intended for use as the standup back panel, providing yet another visual enticement to help promote the product. Mint condition. 8 ) Retail insert card. The card (5 x 3 inches, printed on both sides), issued to the dealer in the retail box, details the various prizes to be found in each pack of gum, and promotes the great value of the product. "See what you get in each Big Penny Package of Tattoo Chewing Gum. All for 1 cent. Initial Letters, Transfer Pictures, or Wise Crack Stickers." The flyer also makes note that the inside of the wrappers features surprises as well: "Your fortune told, pictures of ships, etc." Mint condition. Total: 53 items. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
