Original Cover Painting for Eerie #17 (October 1968)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,115
Presented is the original painting by Barry Rockwell that graced the cover of Eerie #17, published in October 1968. All Warren cover art is naturally rare and significant to collectors, but Eerie 17 has a special interesting distinction: Eerie #17 is one of the rarest of all Warren magazines. It is the key rarity of the Eerie title, and in fact it has been since it was first issued in 1968. Eerie #17 nearly sold out at once and was basically unavailable as a back-issue order. The rarity of the original magazine notwithstanding, this piece more than stands on its own artistic merits. It is all the more desirable being such an early Warren cover art. As is the case with all original Warren cover paintings, the colors are even bolder and more striking than the final, printed version. This painting has extraordinarily vibrant yellows and reds. In recent years, many comic-art collectors have started seeking out the original cover art for Warren titles as this material has become recognized as the very best cover art of the era. The recent publication of The Warren Companion , which chronicles the rich history of Warren Publishing and its legacy of fine art, is further evidence of the high esteem in which collectors hold Warren art. The appreciation for and long-lasting impact of the Warren titles grows with the passing of years, and with it, interest among collectors in original Warren artwork also continues to grow. Gouache-on-board. Dimensions: 15 x 20. This cover art painting was purchased at auction in 2001 and has been consigned to this auction directly from the original buyer. Together with a color copy of the cover of Eerie #17. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
