Blue Hockey - 1972 Limited-Edition LeRoy Neiman Serigraph

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,410

Titled Blue Hockey , issued in 1972, numbered "108/200," and flawlessly signed in pencil along the lower margin by LeRoy Neiman (grading "10"). Edition limited to just 200 total impressions. This striking work represents not only the earliest hockey serigraph ever produced by Neiman but one of only ten to showcase the sport. It is also one of the earliest Neiman serigraphs for any subject. Neiman first began producing serigraphs in 1971 and most of his early sports works were often generic in nature. The offered piece is similar in style to Neiman's first basketball and football serigraphs issued in 1972, both of which featured an action scene against a solid-color backdrop.
The serigraph, which measures 31 x 24 inches (image area), displays very light rippling and a few extremely light surface wrinkles which do not detract in the least from its overall Near Mint appearance. The piece has been matted (by means of tape on the reverse) to total dimensions of 35.25 x 28.25 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,410
