1909-1911 E90-1 American Caramel Honus Wagner Throwing - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,994

Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. Highest-graded example by SGC. In fact, the only higher-graded example recorded by either SGC or PSA to date is a single PSA EX-MT 6. Presented is an extremely striking example of Hall of Famer Honus Wagner in a throwing pose from the very popular E90-1 American Caramel series. This series is the premier candy-card set of the 1910 era. This set is closely related to several other candy sets from the era which share the same format and, in many cases, the same player image. The E90-1 American Caramel set has two different poses of Honus Wagner (batting and throwing). Based on the grading companies population reports (which are very consistent with our own experience) it appears that the throwing pose is much rarer than the batting pose. Bright and clean, both front and back, with vibrant colors, four square corners, no creases or caramel stains, and centered slightly to the right (approximately 75/25 L/R). The very slight natural diamond cut along the bottom edge and the centering to the right is very likely responsible for this card not grading even higher. This card is in extraordinary condition, all the more so for a caramel card, which because they were issued with candy, one card per package, tend to survive in lesser condition than their more common tobacco-card counterparts. This is a tremendous high-grade example of the rarer throwing pose of the legendary Honus Wagner from the premier “E” card issue. (Interesting provenance note: this is one of only two caramel cards that an old-time collector happened to stumble across many years ago. He does not collect vintage cards and just put them aside until now, as in this auction he was consigning some unopened packs, his area of interest. Both caramel cards were E90-1 Wagners, and ironically these two cards turned out to be more valuable than his unopened packs. Each was submitted to SGC by REA and each appears as a separate lot in this auction.) The SMR value for a PSA EX 5 is $3,850 (there is no SMR value for EX+ 5.5 grade). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,994
