1970s Muhammad Ali Training Trunks with Outstanding Provenance

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,875

This pair of white Everlast Muhammad Ali boxing trunks, with black trim, dates to the former heavyweight champion's training days in Deer Lake, Pennsylvania, and are accompanied by both a signed LOA from Wali Muhammad, who was one of Ali's assistant trainers during the 1970s, and an LOA from MEARS. In his one-page letter, dated July 9, 2007, Muhammad writes in full: "My name is Wali Muhammad. I was the assistant trainer for Muhammad Ali from the time of his comeback in the early 1970s until his retirement. During this time period Ali would train at Deer Lake Pennsylvania in anticipation for up coming fights. I do attest that these Everlast boxing trunks, size L, are authentic boxing trunks which were used by Muhammad Ali while training in Deer Lake. The trunks have been in my possession since then." The white-satin trunks, with black waistband and trim, feature a special Everlast label reading "Made Expressly for Muhammad Ali." It should be noted that Everlast boxing gear displaying that special Muhammad Ali exclusivity tagging were not available to the general public or for sale in any other manner. Light-to-moderate wear is evident, including light staining along the inner leg areas. Although no size tag is present, MEARS notes in its accompanying letter that the measurement of the trunks is consistent with the size "Large." MEARS also notes that the special "Made Expressly for Muhammad Ali" tagging was used by Everlast between the years 1972 and 1977. It was during that time span that Ali participated in some of his most celebrated fights, including those against Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Ken Norton. Documented Muhammad Ali fight-worn garments are extremely rare. For that reason, sparring trunks and/or robes, such as this (which are also extremely rare) usually represent the only alternative for those wishing to own an authentic piece of fight gear actually worn by and relating to the legendary career of Muhammad Ali. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $5,875
