1912 T227 "Series of Champions" Jack Johnson (Miners Extra)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,293

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Exceptionally attractive example of legendary boxing Hall of Famer Jack Johnson from the 1912 T227 tobacco series, issued by Miners Extra and Honest Long Cut. This is a particularly impressive example of one of Jack Johnson's rarest and most unusual tobacco cards, and one which has a much stronger appearance than its technically accurate SGC-assigned grade. The card appears Vg-Ex (which is very strong for a T227) but the card has been appropriately downgraded by SGC due to a few light creases mostly in the lower left portion of the card. In VG condition, bright and crisp with brilliant colors, flawless registration, even wear on the corners, and very well centered. The belief is that these cards are rarely found in high grade because cards from this set were packaged in tobacco pouches without protection from either tobacco or general handling. T227 Series of Champions are unique in design, and have the look of “giant T206s.” There are only twenty-five cards in the set, including five boxers. The reverse is fairly clean, and features a biography of Johnson and advertising for Miners Extra Smoking Tobacco. This is a very strong example of this rare, uniquely designed, and, in our opinion, extremely overlooked tobacco issue. One of the best of all Jack Johnson cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++.
