Extremely Rare 1956 Topps Football Unopened Cello Box (36 Packs)

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $29,375

Complete original unopened cello box of 1956 Topps football. This is one of the most remarkable unopened boxes in the entire collecting world. The box houses thirty-six packs with each pack containing fourteen cards, for a total of 504 cards. This incredibly rare unopened box is the only 1956 Topps football cello box we have ever offered or seen. We can't imagine that many complete unopened cello boxes of 1956 Topps football survive, perfectly preserved from fifty-five years ago, before the explosion of interest in unopened boxes and cases of baseball cards, let alone football (which tend to be even rarer than their baseball counterparts). We personally found this complete unopened cello box, untouched and perfectly preserved, hidden away in the home of legendary collector Ron Menchine, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 76. Ron was a lifelong collector who was active since the 1950s. It is highly likely that he personally purchased this box in 1956 and because it had some special meaning to him he put it away as a keepsake. From the inquiries we have made among collectors and dealers, we have yet to locate another unopened cello box of 1956 Topps football. At the very least, this unopened box is an extreme rarity. It may well be unique. The 1956 Topps set features all the stars of the day, including Van Brocklin, Groza, Blanda, Bednarik, Layne, Moore rookie, Gifford, Tittle, and many more. While it is impossible to provide guarantees with reference to grading of unopened material, there is, of course, the very real possibility that within this box are Gem Mint cards of every player in the set. The packs are in Nr/Mt condition. The box has normal shelf wear. From the Ron Menchine Collection. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $29,375
