1948 Leaf Football Complete Set (98)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,400

Complete high-grade set of the classic 1948 Leaf Football gum-card issue, highlighted by fourteen Hall of Famers, including a particularly strong example of key card #34 Sammy Baugh, which has graded EX 60 by SGC. The first forty-nine cards (#1-49) represent the complete first series, and the second series of forty-nine cards (#50-98) represent the rarer high-number cards. These are the first color football cards of the post-World War II era. These cards are extremely bright, fresh, and attractive. From a very old-time collection, this set has been stored away in a closet for decades, possibly since its year of issue. We have selected six cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Luckman RC (SGC EX 60), 3 Turner RC (70/30 L/R and 25/75 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt), 4 Walker RC (70/30 L/R and 25/75 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt), 6 Layne RC (Ex-Mt), 9 Thompson RC (SGC NM+ 86), 13 Lujack RC (75/25 L/R and 70/30 T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt), 15 Justice RC (Ex), 16 Pihos RC (Ex-Mt), 19b McAfee/"Gorgeous George" RC (75/25 L/R, otherwise Ex), 22 Van Buren RC (SGC EX/NM 80), 26 Waterfield RC (25/75 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt), 29 Trippi RC (30/70 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 34 Baugh RC (SGC EX 60), 36 Dudley RC (Vg-Ex), 37 Connor RC (Ex), 52 Nomellini RC (30/70 L/R and T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt), 53 Conerly RC (Ex-Mt), 54 Bednarik RC (80/20 L/R, otherwise Ex), 66 Cloud (SGC NM+ 86), 73 Jensen RC (SGC NM/MT 88), 91 Hart RC (Fr), and 98 DiMarco RC (miscut no left border, otherwise Nr/Mt). The balance of the cards grade as follows: 25% grade Nr/Mt or better, and 75% grade Ex to Ex-Mt (includes a couple cards slightly lesser). Just as the cards in the 1948-1949 Leaf Baseball series are much rarer than Bowman and Topps cards from the late 1940s and early 1950s, Leaf Football cards are also rarer than most other postwar football issues. They are also very distinctive, with an unusual and very colorful design that has always made these a favorite with collectors. There are a few centering issues here and there, as is characteristic of 1948 Leaf Football, but the set is very crisp and fresh across the board. This is a very attractive high-grade complete set of 1948 Leaf Football, one of card collecting's most popular classics. The equivalent SMR value for just the six graded cards (not including the 92 additional cards in the set ) is $2,890. Total: 98 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $9,400
