1888 N28 Allen Ginter PSA-Graded Near-Complete Set (42/50)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,406

Collection of forty-two different of the fifty cards comprising the N28 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" set, including two of the ten baseball players (John Ward and Joseph Mulvey) and the complete set of all forty non-baseball players in the "World's Champions" set. N28 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" is considered by many to be among the most beautiful of all nineteenth-century tobacco-card issues. The set features champions and stars of the day from a wide variety of sports. This near set includes many high-grade cards, including a few incredible "blazers" that would literally be at home in the finest N28 set in the world. Twenty-six cards range from Excellent to Near Mint condition and sixteen range from Vg to Vg-Ex+ (except one Gd). All forty-two cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA (unless otherwise noted). The PSA condition report is as follows: One NM 7: Hanlan (oarsman). Two EX-MT+ 6.5: Bauer (wrestler) and Beach (oarsman). Twelve EX-MT 6: Adams (billiards), Bogardus (rifle shooter), Bubear (oarsman), Gaudaur (oarsman), Kilrain (pugilist), Lannon (pugilist), McLaughlin (wrestler), Mitchell (pugilist), Muldoon (wrestler), Sexton (billiards), Smith (pugilist), and Vignaux (billiards). One EX+ 5.5: Carver (rifle shooter). Ten EX 5: Acton (wrestler), Bibby (wrestler), Carroll (pugilist), Buffalo Bill Cody (rifle shooter), Frey (pool), Hosmer (oarsmen), Malone (pool), Oakley (rifle shooter), Schaefer (billiards), and Teemer (oarsman). One VG-EX+ 4.5: McKay (oarsman). Ten VG-EX 4: Carney (pugilist, SGC EX 60), Daly (billiards), Dempsey (pugilist), Dion (billiards), Hamm (oarsman), McAuliffe (pugilist), Mulvey (baseball), Slosson (billiards), John L. Sullivan (pugilist, GAI VG-EX 4), and Weir (pugilist). Four VG 3: McMahon (wrestler), Sorakichi (wrestler), Trickett (oarsman), and Ward (baseball; please note for disclosure: our consignor submitted this card in its current PSA holder to SGC for a crossover, which SGC denied because it believed that the card has been rebacked). One GOOD 2: Ross (oarsmen). This is a magnificent collection of one of card collecting's most classic issues. The baseball players are often actually easier to find in this issue than the non-baseball players, precisely because they are so much more expensive. Here the work has been done, and all that are needed are eight (of the ten) baseball players for completion. These forty-two cards represent an ideal foundation for the building of a magnificent high-quality entirely graded N28 Allen & Ginter set. The forty non-baseball players represent a very popular subset unto themselves. This is an exceptionally sharp-looking group. Total: 42 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $4,406
